Kirchhoff's Laws
Voltage Law
Objective:
To define and illustrate Kirchhoff's Voltage Law (KVL).
Steps:
Recall the meaning of the arrows used to indicate voltage.
KVL states that the sum of all the voltages around a closed loop is zero.
It is just as valid to choose an anticlockwise loop - just remember to take account of the signs.
An alternative way to look at this is to note that the source voltage must equal the voltage across the resistors.
Additional sources may be added...
...in either direction....
...or all sources may be zero.
Here is a simple example with 2 sources and a resistor. Determine the voltage across the resistor using KVL.
