Background
The training Centre at UoZ is the Power Electronic Systems Group (PESG) in the Department of Power Electrotechnical Systems. At July 2004, the PESG Group consists of 13 staff, 13 researchers and 11 PhD students. There have been over 60 publications in the last 5 years. In the same period, contract income has approached €1M from both State and industry sources including Eltecho, Slovakian State Railways, Central Slovakian Power Distribution, EVPU (the Slovakian Electrical Testing Institute) and VEGA - the Scientific Grant Agency of Slovakia Projects.
A project in sensorless drive trains and started under the EC INCO Copernicus, has allowed UoZ to develop this expertise to the point of active collaboration with UoN in this field. This has been going on for 3 years with the 2-man years of mobility to UoN (1 man-year under MC FP5). Much of the growth of the Department was due to the European TEMPUS project Improvment of Educational Activities in Power Electronics and its Applications. This created new courses in ECCT and complementary subjects, imported expertise, set up new laboratories and purchased computation and measurment hardware. The results pushed the department forward in its effort to become a modern department with a high level educational programme. In 1996 the department finished another TEMPUS project JEN-01939SQ-94 which was a logical continuation of the project mentioned above. Thanks to these experiences, UoZ can now provide PhD studies on a European level and take its place as a parnter in a Marie Curie Training Area.
