Second/Third & Fourth Year Shadowing Scheme
Objectives and LimitationsThe objective of the Shadowing Scheme to enable the 2nd year students to have a foresight of conducting a project before they reach the 3rd year, and to give the 3rd or 4th year students some practice in explaining what they are doing to another more junior person. A secondary objective, which may or may not be feasible depending on the nature of the project, is for the 2nd year student to assist in some limited way with the work and for the 3rd or 4th year student to gain some experience in organising work for another person. The scheme should be seen as a facility, like the library, which has been arranged for the benefit of students. How much a particular student benefits will depend on how much he/she is prepared to make use of the opportunities provided. There will nevertheless be minimum objectives, which should be met. A second year student should not suffer from lack of co-operation by his/her 3 rd or 4 th year pairing or vice-versa. The rules for the operation of the scheme are as follows:- TimingThe 3rd/4th year project runs over both semesters with the majority of work being conducted in the first 6 weeks of the 2nd semester. The shadowing period will occupy the above 6 weeks. This enables the 3rd/4th year students to become fully acquainted with his/her project during semester 1 and if possible to plan some contribution from the 1st year student. The second year student should spend a minimum of 1 hour a week with the 3rd/4th year student. AllocationThe shadowing pairs can be found by clicking the link below. Duties of 3rd/4th Year Students(a) During the 1st semester, plan some work for the 2nd year shadow. (b) Arrange a first meeting time after the January examinations. (c) Fix a weekly meeting time with the shadow and keep a record of the collaboration. Duties of the 2nd Year Student(a) Read the planning document to become acquainted with the project. (b) Keep a diary/record of any work as it is done. DifficultiesIn the event of any difficulties, which cannot be resolved, these should be reported to either Dr Marion Unwin the Undergraduate Director of Teaching or the 3rd/4th year Senior Tutor as appropriate.
