Student
Handbook
Frequently Asked Questions & Answers
You are advised to read the Student
Handbook and the following important pieces of information. Try to
use your tutorials sessions to ask questions that we haven't answered
in this section or in the Student Handbook. If after browsing the Handbook,
you can't find answers to your questions, please contact a member of staff
in the 6th floor Reception or your Tutor.
Where Can I get an official
transcript of my results/confirmation of student status letter?
Official transcripts and confirmation of student status letters are available
from the Student Services Centre which is located on the B floor of the
Portland Building.
Student Opening times: Monday to Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm.
You can also request letters online, please visit http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/academic-office/studentregistry/current.htm.
Do I need to use my University
email account if I have another email account elsewhere?
Yes, as all electronic communications with students by the Department
is via their University email address. You should not rely on autoforward
emails to other accounts.
How can I apply for extenuating
circumstances?
It is very important that you keep your tutor informed of any matter,
however minor, which may affect your studies. This is because the Board
of Examiners has the power to take into account any other information
which is relevant when making its recommendations, see the Progression
and Award
of Undergraduate Degrees sections. This should be done at the
time that the problem occurred and not left until the examination results
are available in July.
Extenuating circumstances:
If you have any problems, illness or other matters which affect
your studies during the year you should let your tutor know about this
as soon as possible. There is a form for recording extenuating circumstances
and this can also be obtained from the reception/enquiry office on floor
6 to which it should be returned on completion. It is University policy
that no account of such difficulties should be taken unless an
Extenuating Circumstances form
is submitted. The form must be supported by appropriate written confirmation
of the circumstances and signed by your tutor. Please also read the Extenuating
Circumstances procedures and guidelines which will help you complete
the form.
It is vitally important that any extenuating circumstances are discussed
with your tutor as early as possible; medical certificates and/or other
supporting evidence are difficult to obtain after the illness has passed.
In cases of a very sensitive or personal nature, the Extenuating Circumstances
form can remain confidential to the Head of Department and will not be
made known to anyone else unless specified by the student. The need to
fill in an Extenuating Circumstances form should not discourage any student
from coming forward and discussing their problems.
Absence from examinations:
If you are absent from an examination it is vital that you let
your tutor know the full circumstances as soon as possible. You should
also obtain an
Absence from Examination form from the reception/enquiry office on
floor 6. The completed form, together with supporting documentary evidence,
should be signed by your tutor and returned as soon as possible.
