Assessment at University level takes several different forms. These include formal examinations, usually taken at the end of a semester, laboratory reports and other pieces of work to be handed in during a semester, progress tests taken at regular intervals during a semester and perhaps oral presentations. Most of these assessments will contribute to your mark for a particular module.
